Cornwall Film Festival 2002

The first ever Cornwall Film Festival featured pre-release screenings of Lynne Ramsay’s acclaimed film Morvern Callar and 1970’s controversial classic Straw Dogs, as well as local filmmaker Mark Jenkin’s award-winning feature Golden Burn, and Antal Kovacs’ innovative Cornish language film Hwerow Hweg.

The festival combined themed selections with continuous screenings of over 60 locally made films exploring Cornish heritage, culture and characters – a mix of drama, animation, documentary and more. The quality and range of work on show offered an inspiring insight into the exciting filmmaking community currently emerging in Cornwall.

In addition, the festival offered visitors a chance to learn more about the practical side of filmmaking – with a range of popular workshops, masterclasses and seminars. These included a Screenwriting Workshop led by BAFTA nominee Hugh Stoddart and a Lighting for Film and Video masterclass with Dave Clarke, as well as numerous discussions and Q&As with the filmmakers whose work was featured on screen. There was something for every generation, as the festival even included a section on films made by children – the Ridley Scotts and Spielbergs of the future.
